— HOW HIGHLANDER CONSULTING WORKS
Your expertise deserves a market that can see it clearly enough to act on it.
Most boutique advisory firms don't have a marketing problem. They have an Expertise Visibility Gap™ — between the intellectual capital they possess and the market recognition they deserve. We help clients close that gap.
We work with boutique, principal-led professional services and advisory firms to convert their expertise into new client opportunities.
— THE HIGHLANDER METHOD™
One engagement. Four Phases. One outcome.
Every Highlander engagement follows the same structured journey — because credibility assets built without diagnosis are guesswork, and intellectual capital left uncommercialized never reaches the market.
These four stages work together. They are not an à la carte menu.
1
DIAGNOSE
Diagnose the Expertise Visibility Gap™
A fact-based calculation. Not an assumption.
Most firms are surprised to learn how their expertise actually appears to the outside world — to prospective clients conducting research, to referral sources describing your capabilities, and increasingly, to AI-assisted discovery systems that summarize and recommend firms like yours.
Before we can strengthen your firm's visibility and authority, we need to understand exactly where the gaps exist. Our Expertise Visibility Assessment™ examines your firm across five dimensions:
-
Clarity: Can prospects and AI understand what your firm does, who it serves, and why it is different?
-
Expertise: Does your public presence demonstrate distinctive knowledge, methodologies, insights, and intellectual capital?
-
Proof: Can your firm substantiate its claims with credible evidence of client value and results?
-
Validation: Is your expertise recognized and corroborated by credible sources beyond your own marketing?
-
Deployment: Are you systematically turning your intellectual capital into assets that strengthen visibility, differentiation, and business development?
WHAT YOU RECEIVE
A detailed written assessment, prioritized findings, and a clear roadmap for what to strengthen and in what sequence — delivered in a live debrief session.
Most firms discover that their expertise is considerably stronger than the signals that represent it in the market. That gap is the starting point for everything that follows.
2
HARVEST
Harvest the Intellectual Capital Already Inside Your Firm
Raw material extraction. Not content development.
Every firm holds intellectual capital it has never identified — judgments sharpened over decades of client work, patterns a partner recognizes on sight but has never written down, methodologies and processes that exist only as instinct.
Before we build anything for the market, we draw this raw material out and give it a form the firm can finally see and refine.
This phase typically surfaces:
-
Proprietary frameworks the firm already uses informally, without a name
-
Patterns of judgment specific to how this firm evaluates a problem
-
Client-facing methodology that has never been written down
-
Results and outcomes the firm has never systematically documented
WHAT YOU RECEIVE
An inventory of the intellectual capital the firm didn't know it had in a usable form — the raw material for everything that follows.
3
Commercialize Proprietary Assets that Prove the Firm's Value
Intellectual capital. Not marketing collateral.
COMMERCIALIZE
What Harvest uncovers becomes something the firm owns: a proprietary methodology, a diagnostic assessment, a framework, or original research that converts raw expertise into intellectual property the market can recognize.
This is where your firm stops sounding like every other firm in its category and starts owning a specific, differentiated point of view.
Depending on your firm's needs, this phase may include:
-
Proprietary methodology development
-
Diagnostic or assessment tool design
-
Original research and data-backed frameworks
-
Formal naming and structure for existing informal practices
WHAT YOU RECEIVE
Branded proprietary assets — methodologies, assessments, or frameworks — that did not exist before the engagement and belong to the firm afterward, ready to be validated and deployed in Stage 4.
4
ACTIVATE
Activate the Firms' Assets Directly Into Business Development
Market engagement. Not website trophies.
This is where most firms' marketing efforts end. It's where ours begins.
A proprietary asset on a website can matter, but it only becomes valuable when you proactively integrate it into business development— using it to start conversations with specific prospects and create opportunities for engagements, including:
-
Targeted outreach — using the firm's new asset as an opening move in direct prospect conversations
-
Credibility-backed introductions — reaching cold prospects with something worth reading
-
Thought leadership deployment — turning proprietary research into reasons to reach out
-
Pipeline development — converting credibility into conversations, and conversations into engagements
-
Acquisition potential — showcasing the firm's value proposition and market credibility for buyers conducting due diligence
WHAT YOU RECEIVE
A business development system built around the firm's credibility assets — one that continues producing results after our engagement ends. See how we activate expertise through earned media and published work and executive thought leadership interviews.
The measure of success is not what we produce together. It is whether your firm is more capable of driving market engagement on its own.
— WHAT TO EXPECT
A few things worth knowing before we talk.
You work directly with me.
Every conversation, every strategy session, every piece of work — me.
Not a junior associate, not a project manager. When you engage Highlander Consulting, you engage Gordon G. Andrew directly.
Engagements are built around your goals.
Every firm is different. Some may need all four phases. Others may need only the Expertise Visibility Assessment™ — the roadmap alone can be enough to move forward independently. No fixed packages. No cookie-cutter solutions.
We start with the Assessment.
For most clients, the right first step is to understand exactly where the visibility gap lies before deciding how to close it. Our Expertise Visibility Assessment™ is a standalone engagement — it produces immediate value and a clear roadmap, whether or not you proceed to the next phases.
Results outlast the engagement.
The objective is not to make your firm dependent on Highlander Consulting. It is to leave your firm more capable of driving market engagement on its own than it was before we started. That is the standard I hold myself to.
— THE RIGHT FIT
The firms I work with best.
Highlander Consulting works with founders and managing partners of boutique, principal-led professional services and advisory firms — organizations whose growth depends on expertise, reputation, and the ability to earn trust with sophisticated buyers.
Examples include:
Strategy and management consulting boutiques · Corporate finance and M&A advisory firms · Private equity advisors · Law firms · Executive search firms · Governance, risk, and compliance firms · Human capital and leadership advisory firms · Technology and digital transformation consultancies · Industry-specialized consulting practices.
If your firm's growth depends on how clearly the market understands and trusts your expertise — we should talk.
— COMMON QUESTIONS
Answers to questions we hear often.
Do we have to engage all four phases?
No. Our Expertise Visibility Assessment™ can be a standalone engagement that delivers immediate value: a clear picture of your firm's visibility and credibility gaps, plus a roadmap to close them. Some firms take that roadmap and execute independently. Other clients proceed through Harvest, Commercialize, and Activate.
How long does a full engagement typically take?
The Assessment typically takes two to three weeks. A full four-stage engagement runs three to six months, depending on the firm's size, goals, pace, and what the Assessment reveals. There are no fixed timelines. We work at the pace that produces the best results for your firm.
What do your services cost?
We price engagements based on scope and the firm's specific needs. The Assessment is the most straightforward starting point. Contact me, and we'll discuss what makes sense for your situation. We can work within most budgets.
Is this only for firms that already have thought leadership?
No. Some firms we work with have a strong body of existing thought leadership that simply isn't being used effectively. Others are starting from scratch. The Assessment tells us where you are and the right approach.
Do you work with large firms?
Occasionally, but the work is designed for boutique and mid-sized firms where expertise, reputation, and credibility are the primary growth drivers. Large firms with dedicated marketing departments are generally not the right fit.
